- 1. Memorandum of understanding to pause ATCW permit and the eventual cancellation of ATCW permit
- 2. Extensive local awareness, small interest across Victoria and interstate to get groups like Animals Australia, Wildlife Victoria, Coalition Against Duck Shooting, Victorian Kangaroo Alliance to support us and our actions
- 3. Political party interest being Greens and AJP as well as local member Chris Brayne
- 4. Petition of over 9000 signatures
- 5. Political pressure on Lily D’Ambrosio, DELWP secretary John Bradley, Conservation regulator and DELWP. Enough that they have made 2 media releases and committed with Mornington Peninsula Shire Council (MPSC) to create a wildlife plan for the peninsula
- 6. Have unanimous support from MPSC to pass a motion to protect Eastern Grey Kangaroos on the peninsula
- 7. Creation of social media accounts and website
- 8. Obtain over 50 volunteers from the community and a fifth of them active
- 9. Held events, movie, walks, picnics, and surveys
- 10. Have the support of macropod experts such as Vets for Compassion and wildlife shelters
- 11. Opening of gates on the Cape Schanck property
- 12. Installation of one-way gates
- 13. Co-set up of kangaroo monitoring on the peninsula
- 14. Final year RMIT students undertaking a research project to see the impacts wildlife exclusion fencing has on wildlife
What are our ongoing concerns?
- 1. Welfare of Eastern Grey Kangaroos on the Mornington Peninsula, especially the ones o the Cape Schanck Property.
- 2. The status of the 100 kangaroo harvest program tags that management of the property have
- 3. Concerns that permits to cull and harvest Eastern grey kangaroos are being permitted without proper investigations
- 4. Current installation of one-way gates. Are they one-way and are there enough
- one-gates installed
- 5. DELWP attitudes and response to Eastern Grey Kangaroos
- 6. Weed infestation of the National Park
- 7. Weak State protection laws for fauna
- 8. Weak planning laws and lack of enforcement by MPSC
- 9. Poor and misinformed attitudes of land holders and managers towards Eastern Grey Kangaroos
What do we want to achieve?
1.For all remaining kangaroos trapped at Cape Schanck to safety leave the forementioned property
2.To engage in positive dialogue with management and owner of the Cape Schanck property to facilitate the kangaroos release.
3. To create a positive attitude towards kangaroos, especially amongst local landowners
4. Identify landowners/managers who apply for atcw or khp permits/tags
5. improve/strengthen laws, wildlife plans and planning schemes including but not limited to MPSC Biodiversity plan, ESO, VPO, SLO, DELWP Kangaroo and Wallaby Management Guidelines
6. Use Symposiums, workshops and other community events. Send Westernport scenario to all.
7. Develop a Wildlife hospital and education centre.
